Student Leadership
Head Students, House Captains, and Prefects
Student leadership is a cornerstone of our school community, with an average of 98% of Year 13 students opting to become Prefects. Our student leaders exemplify excellence in various fields, from academia to sports, performing arts to lay ministry. They lead events crucial to the joyous nature of the school, such as House Music and Sports Day, and work hard to preserve the inclusive nature of the school, helping all students make the most of their time in the King’s family. Below is an outline of the key leadership groups:
Head Students
Head Students at our school embody the highest standards of excellence and leadership. They serve as ambassadors for the school on all public occasions, demonstrating exemplary public relations abilities, organisational skills, and a presentable appearance. Their responsibilities include attending and organising school functions, such as Open Evenings and assemblies, liaising between staff and pupils, and contributing to school events like Charities Week. Respected by both staff and peers, Head Students are approachable, particularly by younger students, and are fully involved in the life of the school. They are expected to cope under pressure, manage academic demands, and maintain a good working relationship with everyone in the school community.
House Captains
Being a House Captain is both enjoyable and rewarding, offering insights into working with pupils and staff in a competitive yet enthusiastic environment. The role requires a high level of commitment, particularly during the first half-term, as it involves organising events such as House Music and Sports Day. Effective communication with House Staff and Representatives is crucial. Each House has two captains and four vice-captains, chosen from Year 13, based on their contributions to the School and their House during their time at King's. All students have the opportunity to gain 'House Points' for various achievements, competing in sporting, musical, and academic activities throughout the school year. This fosters a strong sense of community and works towards the prestigious 'House Cup,' awarded after Sports Day at the end of the school year. The highlight of the year is undoubtedly 'House Music,' where all Houses compete in one night of fantastic musical entertainment.
Prefects and Senior Prefects
The role of Senior Prefect is crucial, requiring enhanced leadership and commitment. Responsibilities include teaching a tutor-group weekly, leading a team of Duty Prefects, and ensuring a safe environment during break times. Senior Prefects also develop and deliver the Learning to Learn programme, assist with administrative tasks, and support the Form Tutor. They play an active role in school events, such as Cathedral Services, Speech Day, and Open Evenings, and help supervise pupils. The Prefect role offers a valuable opportunity to lead within the school, fostering a sense of achievement and community. The school has prefects for all subjects and occasions, such as Charities Week. The volume of prefects within the school represents the multitude of opportunities we offer both in and out of lessons. We invite all students to take on leadership roles, contributing to the vibrant and supportive environment that defines our school.
