Library and Resources
Welcome to our school's Library, a serene haven designed for quiet reading and focused study. With a welcoming atmosphere that celebrates each individual's unique journey, our Library actively promotes reading for pleasure, helping your child to develop a lifelong love of learning and a deep respect for knowledge.
Open every school day from 8:15 am to 4:00 pm, our Library boasts an impressive collection of around 16,000 books. In addition to this extensive stock, we offer journals, eBooks, audiobooks, and educational videos and films through the ClickView platform. Our range of electronic resources supports extended research, ensuring students have access to a wealth of information. Our main collections are enhanced with additional Careers, Local History and Reference collections.
We encourage your child to apply for the role of pupil librarian, a position that fosters responsibility and leadership. The Library is expertly managed by Mrs. Wildman, a qualified and Chartered Librarian, who is always available to assist with research queries, book recommendations, and other requests. Additionally, the Library is supported by a prefect, who helps strengthen links with the curriculum and organizes engaging events.
Our Library serves as an information repository and a gateway to high-quality information sources, specifically developed for the education sector.
Here’s what some of our students have to say about the Library:
Being a pupil librarian has taught me so much about responsibility and leadership. Plus, Mrs. Wildman is always there to help! – Najim, Year 9
The resources available are incredible. I can always find what I need for my projects and more. – Yusra and Zulaika, Year 12
Join us in the Library, where every visit is an opportunity to explore, learn, and grow in a nurturing environment.
The Library has twenty-one networked computers and sixteen netbooks, plus twenty-nine iPads for use within the Library or classrooms.
There are also six digital still cameras and six digital camcorders for use within school.
There is seating for thirty-two downstairs, sixteen upstairs and twenty-one in the Wolfson Room.
The Library maintains a Careers Library with books and leaflets on careers information, university and college prospectuses and access to a variety of careers information databases. Some resources are located in the UCAS Room.
Book Club runs weekly on a Tuesday break time, to which all are welcome. Various competitions and events are celebrated throughout the School year, such as National Poetry Day and World Book Day.
Pupils have access to the Library catalogue, Oliver, from inside and outside school.
Oliver is a database of all the available resources, such as:

Accelerated Reader is a national scheme whereby pupils’ reading ability, vocabulary and comprehension are tested. Pupils are then allocated a number range, called a zpd. The Library books have been given stickers showing the Book Level and pupils can choose to read any of the books within their range in order to improve. After a book is finished a quick online test is taken to record results.
To find the Book Level of a book in the Library, you can use Oliver, the Library catalogue. The search needs to be very specific, so please type in “Book Level 3.60” for example, and include the speech marks. You will then be able to see whether the book is available or on loan, and where to find it.

Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo
A boy who is scared to go to school and thinks as if every night was his final night, gets to school and finds a friend called Molly. A story as told from the perspective of a First World War soldier.
This book has lots of suspense and is really descriptive. I would say that children who like suspense should read this book.

Katie can’t leave her house during the day. She has a rare disease that makes even the smallest amount of sunlight deadly. She falls in love with a boy that passes her window every day. How long can she keep this a secret?
I like this book because it brings hope to the reader and makes you wonder what’s going to happen next!

The OMG Blog by Karen McCombie
Four girls meet in detention as their ICT teacher gives them a form for a group of four to make a blog competition. After some days they find something that they all have in common (find out what it is yourself!).
The book was interesting, colourful and not boring. I liked the fact that they had a great time, but towards the end it was bad, but it turned good again.

Listen To The Moon by Michael Morpurgo
I read Michael Morpurgo’s “Listen to the Moon” over the summer; I loved every bit, from start to finish. The story is set in World War I and is about a girl who has to remember who she is and where she is from. I really liked it when it got exciting and you didn’t know what was going to happen next! At times the story would be happy and joyful however it could get very emotional in a matter of seconds. Throughout the book there were cliff hangers to build tension, figurative language in order to paint a picture in your mind, and short sentences for effect.
Did you know that Michael Morpurgo received an OBE in 2006 and was made Knight Bachelor in 2018?
In my opinion, this book is for children aged 10+ that enjoy historic adventure stories.
My three words to describe the book? Can't Put Down!

Alex Rider: Skeleton Key by Anthony Horowitz
I enjoyed the book "Skeleton Key" because it was filled with suspense and action.
One of the main reasons I liked this book was – Alex was not only a MI6 agent this time, he was also a CIA agent. The book felt so real, it was like you were in the book.
When Alex had to fight a White Shark, my heartbeat nearly stopped and I was sweating.

Ellie's Magical Bakery: Brilliant Birthday Bakes! by Ellie Simmonds
Describe the characters and their traits: Ellie: gentle, kind, timid, thoughtful, and helpful. Victoria Sponge: magical, wise, clever. Colin: mean, spiteful, rude. Basil: funny, kind, supportive. Mr & Mrs Scrudge: mean, unsupportive, bad tempered, rude, and uncouth. Talia: kind, generous, happy.
This book relates to me and my life because… I love cooking and eating cake. It inspired me as Ellie Simmonds has overcome many problems and challenges in her life.
Overall you should read this story because… It shows that having a disability can be overcome and you can still achieve your dreams like everybody else.
Ellie Simmonds, the author, gained an MBE when she was only 14 years old, she is a four time Paralympic swimming champion, she holds ten world records for swimming and has appeared on the Great British Bake Off!
