Drama Productions

At King's School, we pride ourselves on our inclusive nature in Drama; we believe that there is a role for every child.

We run a full-scale Musical Production for Years 9-13 in the Spring Term, where your child can shine on stage. Our younger students in Years 7-9 have the opportunity to take part in a Lower School play in the Summer Term, giving your child a chance to explore their talents early on. Additionally, we run Drama clubs for our younger students, focusing on developing their practical and technical skills.

Our productions also offer your child the opportunity to learn about theatre roles outside of performing. Our backstage crew consists of older students, with many operating our lighting and sound design for the shows. Other students elect to support in set design and costume making, with guidance from the Art and Design Departments. We also offer opportunities for student choreographers and assistant directors, ensuring your child can find their passion in every aspect of theatre.

In January 2025, approximately 120 students ranging from Years 9-13 participated in the school's musical production of Footloose. Within the Drama department, inclusivity is strongly promoted throughout everything that we do. Providing that students are committed to the rehearsal process, everyone that auditions is guaranteed a part. Students work tirelessly through lunchtime and afterschool rehearsals to master choreography, dialogue scenes and singing rehearsals. The show was a huge success, selling out a 3-night run in under 24 hours

Additionally, student collaboration is key to the success of the show. Older students have the opportunity to take on a prominent role within the creating process, as either a designer, stage management, cast calling, backstage crew, an assistant director or a dance captain. Other departments, such as Art, Music, Design Technology and Textiles are heavily involved in creating the show and we are proud of the collaborative spirit that the production fosters.

Year 7 students have the opportunity to take part in a weekly Drama club. Here, they have the opportunity to build upon skills acquired in lessons and develop their creativity further within the subject. This club is run by Lower Sixth A Level Drama students who are invaluable in sharing their experience in the subject through mentoring the younger students. Students also have the opportunity to discover new exercises and work on new and exciting practical projects.

For the first time this year, students in Years 7-9 have their own performance opportunity. Students will have the chance to audition for a Lower School play. We will be putting on a selection of Grimm Tales on Friday 4th July. The show is inclusive; everyone that auditions is guaranteed a role providing they are able to commit to rehearsals and the performance night. Rehearsals will take place at lunchtime in the Drama studio. This promises to be an exciting opportunity for the younger students to develop their skills in the subject outside of the curriculum format.
