The King's (The Cathedral) School

“La mathematica è l’alfabeto nel quale Dio ha scritto l’universo.”

“Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe.”

Galileo Galilei

Mathematics is both a practical and creative pursuit. Being both the primary tool of modern science and technology and a means of exploring abstract worlds, seeking the elegance, pattern and beauty contained within.

“There is geometry in the humming of the strings, there is music in the spacing of the spheres.”

Pythagoras of Samos

The Mathematics Department at King’s delivers the National Curriculum via a range of different mediums, fully preparing pupils for the world of work and further study. As well as delivering the curriculum, students participate in individual and team UKMT Mathematics challenges and take part in enrichment activities. All year groups are set regular homework and assessments to closely monitor their progress.

Students in KS3 work on five aspects of Mathematics:

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change
  • Geometry and Measures
  • Statistics and Probability

Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 are set within two year halves.  Pupils have the opportunity to take part in UKMT Maths challenges, and our pupils succeed in both the team and individual challenges.

All pupils in Years 10 and 11 follow the Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Mathematics course (1MA1), at Foundation or Higher level. The Foundation level covers grades from 1-5 and Higher covers grades 4-9.

The following content domains apply to both tiers:

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change
  • Geometry and Measures
  • Statistics and Probability

The students will sit 3 papers in the summer of Year 11, 1 non-calculator and 2 calculator papers, each lasting for 90 minutes. Pupils may also participate in team and individual UKMT Maths challenges.

Pupils in KS5 can continue their study of Maths by choosing A-Level Mathematics or Further Mathematics. These A-Levels are split into Pure content and Applied content which includes both Statistics and Mechanics.  Edexcel is the exam board followed; A-Level Mathematics (9MA0) and A-Level Further Mathematics (9FM0)

Each student has two Mathematics teachers to support different aspects of the A-Level curriculum, and regular homework tasks and assessments are given to monitor progress. At the beginning of Year 12, students take an algebra competence test, to ensure that they can cope with the algebraic rigour of the A-Level course.

A-Level students can also participate in the UKMT Senior Maths challenges individually, and as a team. A highlight of the year is an opportunity for Year 12 students to assist with the running of the Primary Maths Challenge held for 30+ primary school teams every year.
