The King's (The Cathedral) School

Fundraising Developments at King's

New appointments, and how you can get involved

The Governing Body has been considering how to secure the future continued success of the school as one of the top schools in the region and arguably nationally.  Funding from the government has reduced by nearly £1m, which presents certain challenges for a school eager to continue to deliver not only a first class academic education for its pupils, but also a broad and diverse extra-curricular experience.

Over the past year the Headteacher, Mr Darren Ayling, and the Governing Body have been exploring how best to build up the success and thriving community that is The King’s (The Cathedral) School.  With this in mind they have drawn on the advice and expertise of the Cathedral asking how we might best proceed in building a fundraising and development strategy for the school.

A Fundraising Committee was initially established from the current Governing Body to consider the working model that would best suit the needs of the School.  In December 2016, invitations were sent to a number of local people who have significant experience in this field to join the Fundraising Committee.  This group is building upon the considerable activity already being undertaken at the school by a number of groups such as the Old Petriburgians Association (OPA) and the Parent and Staff Association (PSA) and considering other avenues of funding, sponsorship opportunities, and grants that may be available.

In January 2017, Mrs Rebecca Powell was appointed as a part-time Fundraising Officer.  This is a temporary post that may be extended should the initiative prove successful.  Mrs Powell will support the committee, act as a point of contact and communicate activity, and work with the OPA and PSA.  She will also be responsible for investigating and securing other sources of funding that may be available to the School.

The first formal meeting of the committee was held on Wednesday 8 February 2017.  Updates will be posted regularly on the school website.  Of this new initiative Mr Ayling said, “I am delighted that governors have chosen to take such a positive and proactive step in responding to the funding challenges faced by King’s, and indeed all schools.  With such a strong team behind us and the commitment of the King’s School Family, I am confident we can continue to offer an unrivalled education and if we are as successful as we aim to be, ever improve on it!  I’d like to take this opportunity to thank parents, staff and governors as well as those who have volunteered to support us for their generosity.  It is much appreciated.  We are on the front foot in planning for the continued success of the school despite difficult economic times for us all”.
